Leah Remini on Leaving Scientology: I Did It for My Daughter
The media exploded when King of Queens star Leah Remini left Scientology in 2013 and she is still dealing with the fallout. She opened up to Oprah Winfrey about her tough decision recently, and stressed she left the Church because of her daughter.
Not many people know this, but Leah was born into Scientology – her mother was a member even before Leah was born. Leah admits the Church formed her character, the way she thought and the way she looked at life. "I didn't decide to get into it — I was brought into it by my mom,” she said.
Leah was a dedicated scientologist for three decades, and explained what was expected of the members. "I don't think people know the amount of dedication it takes to be in this organization," she shared. "I mean it was every day, three-and-a-half hours minimum, seven days a week usually. You know, I'm working most of my time, and then the other time was spent at the church, so minimal time is really spent with your family."
An important event made her leave the Church – her daughter learned how to swim on her own while Leah was doing her coursework. "And a tear came down my face. And I was like, 'What am I doing?'” It made her sad that her daughter was receiving a message telling her that church is more important than spending time together. Leah admitted to Oprah that her family is still adjusting to the change even though it has been two years since her tough decision.
